A Guide to finding a Regiment on a large War Memorial
given by Don Brown, Normandy Veterans Association
On memorials such as the Menin Gate and all Common Wealth War Memorials the casualties are given by regiment and they inturn are given in Army List Order. The Army List is neither alphabetical or geographical, but the following may help when looking for regiments or relatives. The column headed SD indicates in which part of 'Soldiers died on the Great War' the regiment will be found and O denotes 'Officers died in the Great War'. The heading 1881 indicates the numbers of marching regiments of Foot which were the predecessors of the regiments of the 1914. The official names during the War are given below but some were changed slightly in the early 1920's. Commonwealth troops are found after the United Kingdom troops. A simple rule for the order of troops is :- Cavelry, Artillery, Engineers, Infantry.
