South Metropolitan Gas Company

The Souvenir of The Great War for the South Metropolitan Gas Company is not only an interesting piece of local history but gives an insight as to who worked within the Company and how their lives were changed and the Company changed during The Great War.

The pages tell of how the gas supply was kept going with many men following the call to enlist. What happened to the workforce and who stepped in to fill the shortage of men – women, and what their roll was during this time?

The Company’s fleet of steamers, and what were they called? What tasks did they perform and what was the toll on the fleet and those who sailed upon them?

The information continues with how the Company retrained the men who had returned from war with some form of disability and of the War Fund – how it was set up and used. A section is dedicated to a member of each service telling of his memories during his time away.

The honours awarded to those who worked or had worked within the Company and the Roll of Honour are followed by the details of the church service held at Southward Cathedral on April 6 1918.

Included in the pages are images of people at work and of the fleet.

Even if you have no connection with the South Metropolitan Gas Company the information gives a good insight into the area and of the time during The Great War
