| Atkinson R | Robert Edward Atkinson was the son of Fred and Bessie, born in Castleford in 1893. In 1901 the family lived at Fenton St, Skelton where Fred worked as an ironstone miner. By the end of the war Fred and Bessie were living at 40 Ings Cottages, Crofton. Robert enlisted in Wakefield, into the KOYLI as pte 2007 and he was KIA on 19 December 1915. He rests in Bard Cottage Cemetery. Robert left a widow, Louisa who lived at 2 Scotts Yard, Brunswick Street. |
| Ball C | Charles was the son of Nathan and Julia Ball who in 1901 were living at Farrars Yard in the parish of St Mary. Nathan and his family had moved from Castleford and Normanton where the 3 eldest children were born- only charles and his younger brother were born in the City. Charles enlisted into the KOYLI as Pte 202041 and died of wounds on 28 July 1917 aged 29 and is remembered at Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport. By this time Charles was married and his wife lived at Stanley. |
| Beaumont F | Frank was born in Burley in 1886 but by the end of the war his sister Esther was living at Marsland St, Primrose Hill. Frank enlisted in 1905, joining the KRRC as 6541in York. Frank was described as 5'3" 128lb and had grey eyes and brown hair with a scar on left forearm and right side of his face. He also had flat feet. In 1912 he was in Aldershot and placed on the Army Reserve List. During the war he was called off the Reserve List as on 23 October 1914 he was KIA and is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing. |
| Binns A | Arthur was the son of Charles Henry and Lily Binns, born in 1890, who in 1901 were living in Bishopgate. Arthur enlisted in Wakefield, joining the West Yorkshire Regt., as Pte 61821. He was KIA on 24 August 1918 and is remembered on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial |
| Brice W | There are 5 w Brice on the CWGC website and on SWDTGW but none have a specific link to Wakefield. There is however, a T W Brice born in 1900 to Walter (from Devon) and Nelly Brice. Could this be The W Brice mentioned, as he is from John Street in the Parish of St Mary. |
| Brice C H | Charles Henry Brice was the son of widow Mary Ann Brice (spouse to John) who in 1901 was a Landlady from Devon as was father from W Brice, living on Pincheon Street with her 2 children and 10 boarders. The property must have been very close to the junction with Hardy Croft. Charles enlisted in Wakefield, joining the Norfolk Regiment as Pte 42507 and died of wounds on 11 October 1918 aged 35 and rests in Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport. By this time he had married Mary Elizabeth who was living at 11 Crystal Place, John Street. |
| Bradshaw F | Fred Bradshaw was the youngest child of Joseph and Alice in the 1901 census being 12 years old. He enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI and rising to Sergt., 200352. Fred died of wounds on 26 July 1917 and rests on Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport. |
| Broadbent J | John Broadbent was the son David and Sarah, who in 1901 were living at 48 & 50 Warrengate - David was a self employed grocer and father of 6 children - John being the eldest. He enlisted in Dewsbury to the KOYLI and became Pte 17462 but was KIA on 13 December 1915 and is remembered in Houplines Communal Cemetery Extension with over 400 other identified casualties |

| Burgess C | Cyril was the son of Arthur and Florence Burgess who in 1901 lived at Berners Street, where Arthur worked as a Commission Agents Clerk. Cyril enlisted into the RHA and became L/Bdr 14013. He died on 14 October 1918 aged 20 and rests in abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension. |
| Burton P | Percival Burton was the son of Walter and Elizabeth Burton of Johnstone Street, Wakefield. He enlisted in Wakefield into the York & Lancs as Pte 38622 but on his military records is known as Percy. He died of wounds on 22 December 1917 age 23 and rests in his home town - Wakefield Cemetery. |

William in 1901 was a bricklayer aged 19. He enlisted in Wakefield, joining the Coldstream Buards as Pte 13472 and died of wounds on 16 November 1916 aged 35 and rests in Grove Town Cemetery, Meaulte |
| Chappell J W | John William was the son of David and Alice Chappell who in 1901 lived at 1 Grove Terrace where David worked as a Railway Guard. Later on the family moved to 231 Kirkgate. John enlisted in Leeds into the Prince of Wales's Own Regt., as Pte 41258 and was KIA on 11 october 1918 aged 29 and is remembered on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial along with many others whose final resting place is not known. John left a widow, Elsie who later remarried into the Kaye family and moved to 11 Napier Street, Ward Green, Barnsley. |
| Clark T | Thomas Clark was, according to one source, born in Crofton and enlisted in Wakefield to the Lincolnshire Regt., becoming Pte 938. He was KIA on 1 July 1916 - one of many who were killed or died on the 1st Day of the Battle of the Somme. | Cockell A | Algernon Cockell was the son of Martin and Matilda who in 1901 lived at 8 Warehouse Yard int he parish of St Michael - Martin worked as a wool warehouseman but by the end of WW1 he was living at the Hatter Arms, Wakefield. Algernon enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI and became L/Cpl 9839. He was KIA on 28 August 1914 aged 23 and is remembered on La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial along with over 3700 others who have no known grave |

In 1901 Richard was aged 59 and a retired Glass Blower. Frederick enlisted in Wakefield, like others joining the KOYLI and becomming Pte 2993. He was KIA on 2 December 1916 aged 23 and he rests in Bienvillers Military Cemetery |
| Gilbert J M | John Marks Gilbert was the son of Henry and Charlotte who in 1881 lived in Navigation Yard. By 1891 J M was living with his sister Charlotte and her husband, also in Navigation Yard. John served in the South African Campaign for which he was mentioned in dispatches. During his life he had also been Assistant Organizing Secretary to Lord Roberts in the National Service League. According to sources John enlisted in Preston, joining the RGA and rising to Battery Sergt., Major 2658 and was KIA on 2 November 1914 aged 42 and rests in Brown's Road Military Cemetery, Festubert. John had married Margaret Ellen who by the end of the war is living in Heathwood Gardens, Charlton, London. |
| Gill L | Lawrence Henry Gill was the son of Charles and Kate Heathcote Hill who in 1901 lived at Bakers Yard - by the end of the war Kate was living at 2 OUghs Yard off Park Street. Lawrence enlisted in Wakefield, joining the KOYLI as Pte 201461. He was KIA on 20 July 1918 aged 21 and he is remembered on the Soissons Memorial along with over 3800 other young men who have no known grave |

| Hartley F D | Fred Dodds Hartley was the son of Albert and Esther and husband of Edith who lived after the war at Monk Street. Fred enlisted in Pontefract into the York and Lancs as Pte 38828. He died on 31 March 1918 aged 36 and rests in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No. 1. |
| Heffer G H | George Harry Heffer was the son of George and Ellen Eliza Heffer of Wakefield. In 1891 the family lived at Marsland Street but by 1901 Ellen Eliza was a widow and still in Marsland Street. Harry enlisted in Barnsley into the Yorks and Lancs and became Pte 14/900. He was KIA on 18 September 1918 and rests in Chapelle British Cemetery, Holnon. |
| Heptonstall W G | William Gladstone Heptonstall was born in Wakefield in 1880, the son of Joseph and Lydia of 36 Charles Street, Primrose HIll. Joseph was working as a boot maker and at the end of the war the family were still living in no. 36. William enlisted in Derby, joining the Sherwood Foresters as Pte 71878. He was KIA on 7 June 1917 aged 37 and he is remembered, like many others, on the Ypres Memorial - The Menin Gate Memorial |
| Hepworth H | Harry Sanderson Hepworth was born in Wakefield in to the RAMC as Pte 65. According to his records he joined the Imperial Service Section on 5 September 1914 and he was KIA on 27 September 1915 aged 30. His records also state that his father was Edward poss. of the Jacobs Well Tavern and that his mother was deceased. He had one brother, George and sisters, Nellie, Florrie and Laura. The information also goes on to say that he had a widow, Minnie of 15 Anderson Tce., Plumpton. Information in the records tells that he served 'at home' from 5 September 1914 - 14 December of the same year and served as part of the BEF from 15 December 1914 on board African Prince from Southampton to the date of his death in 1915. A typed sheet of paper tells that he was buried in Vermelles British Cemetery row M grave 2 (that differs from the CWGC numbering) and that he had a burial conducted by the Rev. J S Gibbs . His widow, Minnie received a pension of 10/- per week for herself from 10th April 1916. |

| Jewson F | Frank was born in 1887, the son of Samuel and Martha who in 1891 lived at Savilles Buildings ? Primrose Hill. By 1901 Francis is living with his in-laws at 164 South Street, next door to his widowed father who lived at 162. Frank became Pte 298099 in the London Regiment and was KIA on 9 August 1918 aged 32. A letter in amongst his army papers concerns papers received from the Red Cross regarding Henry - it goes on to say that "since enlistment Arthur lived with me having no mother and losing my son last Dec. the 2nd. | Spencer A | Arthur Spencer was born in 1897 in Wakefield the son of Christopher and Ann who in 1901 lived at 7 Ship Yard, Wakefield, where Christopher worked as a dyers labourer. By the time the war was over the family lived at Stennard Cottage. Like so many other locals Arthur joined the KOYLI as Cpl 1876 and died of wounds on 22 November 1915 aged 18 and he rests in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium with over 10,000 other men and one woman - Nelly Spindler |

John worked as a carter in the ammonia works to feed his family of 4 children.
