The Orangery and its grounds were the garden of Pemberton House, Westgate. The building surrounded by workers houses, land was purchased at the rear of the property to be used as a garden. The Orangery today is still an oasis in Wakefield and only a stones throw from the busy station and Westgate. The building and grounds at one time were used as a botanical garden and at one time had a bear. The bear is reputed to have escaped and mauled a local hostiliers wife !
